Interview: Jillian Sheridan

We’re excited for the launch of AG Hair and Eastwood Cycle’s partnership for a monthly Pop-Up Blow Dry Bar. We caught up with Jillian Sheridan, owner of Eastwood Cycle to talk about their one-year anniversary, the event and all things spin.

AG Hair: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Jillian Sheridan: 26, married to my best friend with an incredible little Labradoodle named, Mick. You can find me at our sanctuary or enjoying our home/neighborhood in Deep Cove. Eastwood is my creative canvas to express myself through exercise, fashion, art, music and cool collaborations like ours with AG Hair. Do what makes you happy, love what you do and create a life you love: all words to live by.

AG: It’s the one-year anniversary of Eastwood! Congratulations! Can you take us back to the beginning – how did the idea of spin-sanctuary start? And where did the name Eastwood come from?

JS: Wow, our one-year has FLOWN by. One year ago we were working at Eastwood from the early morning to 2 or 3 in the morning (literally running on no sleep). Never in my life have I learnt so much in such a short amount of time. Looking back now I realize how truly blessed we’ve been to have discovered so many incredible people to surround ourselves with. Our success has come from our people – staff and riders!

The concept of Eastwood was born in Sayulita (Mexico) with a lot of tequila and sun. Whenever we vacation it basically turns into an inspiration/brainstorming trip to create new ideas and concepts that we now implement at Eastwood. There are items all over Eastwood and our home that we collect when we travel that inspire ideas and the culture we strive to create. We started talking about it when we both came to the conclusion, we love spin but there was nowhere in Vancouver where we could spin and enjoy it as a lifestyle experience and not just another gym class – somewhere we wanted to spend our time and our money!

AG: We love the design and décor of Eastwood. What were the inspirations?

JS: I’ve always been inspired by Moroccan design. Once we decided we wanted to coin Eastwood as a ‘sanctuary’ I thought the two elements were the perfect match. I find Moroccan textures, colours and elements to offer a sense of serenity and peace – something we wanted to instill in our community pre and post spin.

AG: Some people are intimidated about taking a spin class. What would you say to convince and ease their perception?

JS: You’re not alone! Everyone is a beginner at some point; you just need to decide where/when to start. We welcome all levels and encourage people getting into spin to go at your own pace, you control your tension. If you need to dial it back your first few classes until you feel comfortable – no problem. Do what’s right for you, not for the people around you.

AG: What are your current favourite tracks to play during spin?

JS: Old school hip-hop/rap at all times!

AG: And we can’t help but ask, any post-spin hairstyling tips?

JS: AG DRY SHAMPOO. Give your hair a spritz pre-spin to help soak up any moisture during class and then after as well. It’s honestly our lifesaver.

AG: Can you talk a bit about the upcoming Pop-Up Blow Dry Bar, #SpinHairWeCare?

JS: The girls here were always talking about how we needed someone to come in to do Blow Dry’s, if it’s not a dry shampoo day it can be a bit of a challenge to tame/style your tresses after a sweaty class. When our partnership with AG was sparked we thought it would be the perfect fit. What better way to start your day or get ready for the evening… spin, shower, style, go!

AG: And it’s almost the holiday season (Thanksgiving is just around the corner)! Do you have any tips for staying in shape while tackling back-to-back holiday parties?

JS: Plan a routine and commit. Life is too short NOT to indulge in big turkey dinners, sweets and holiday cocktails. We recommend challenging yourself to three spin classes a week – it’s a realistic, attainable goal that will leave you feeling fit and ready for your next party.

AG: Your top three favourite places in Vancouver (this can be anything from restaurants, local hangouts or favourite secret hideaway in town):

JS: Where to begin! We’re big into food in our family and group of friends. If we’re not at Eastwood, enjoying our new home, or by the water with Mick, we love YEW, Chambar, or Heirloom (among many others). We’re extremely lucky to live in Vancouver and love food! 🙂
