Ndemu School – Nanyuki, Kenya

History: While primary education is free in Kenya, the government is reluctant to invest in educational institutions in marginalized, rural areas. In 2008, WLC built a water project in Nanyuki that provides water for 3 villages, enabling girls to stay in school full days instead of walking long distances to fetch water. One of the schools was in desperate need of new latrines and classrooms and we were also able to provide these new structures as well.

The project: Provided water to 263 families in 3 villages. Built 8 new classrooms, 10 pit latrines and a perimeter fence to keep the children safe.

A Day in the life

Founder and CEO, Lotte Davis spent a day with 15-year old Lois, witnessing first-hand her morning routine of chores that begin each day at 5am. It’s these chores specifically that keep young girls from attending school on time or in some cases – attending school at all.
